Art & Copy reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. I borrowed the video from the library over Easter to help me learn more about the advertising industry as this is a potential area of work for me in the future. I really enjoyed the film as it looked at the advertising industry from different aspects, including a fourth generation billboard hanger.
I really liked the creative elements of the advertising world – coming up with the art direction for the adverts and this is something I would enjoy doing. Many of the comments the experts were making about how to be successful in advertising followed my own principles in my marketing career, listening to what the client wants but thinking beyond that, understanding the customer’s needs, projecting a brand/image, and communicating a clear and simple message that rings true for the company and consumer.
It seems like there is plenty of money to be had in the industry, but not that many career options. There are only a handful of great advertising companies in the world doing the type of inspirational work shown in the film, and the work is very demanding and competitive.
Overall I like the idea of working with advertising, but I do not like the idea of working IN advertising.
