I am currently making my second short profile film about a print maker and during the process I have been reflecting on these films in relation to the films I’ve made documenting equipment and processes.
The need for connection with a person and their story and opinions somewhat limits the format, however, this does provide clear communication and makes it easier to engage with content. But the question I ask myself after the success of the GoPro and the printing press is whether the person themselves is enough engage new audiences in craft or perhaps challenge perceptions. It could be argued that what is actually needed is a better curation of content rather than ‘wacky’ filming or editing – that is to say: pick interesting people!
In saying that, a more contemporary approach has been taken to the style of the shot – narrow depth of field, cropped headers, close-ups of action, focus on the detail – providing a truth to the materials on screen and tying into what people are referencing as the key areas of attraction to the craft. This conscience styling does provide a point of difference from many of the films on the subject and perhaps negates the need for using tricks and gimmicks to give the impression of ‘cool’. Indeed it may be that to employ these methods may jar with the audience and actually be off putting to the viewer.
At this point I think it best to continue with a traditional edit of interview/documentary work which gives the opportunity for personality and openness to shine through by including more candid moments and therefore break down barriers which are preventing people from contacting their local letter presser for work or training opportunities. The narrative created from the interview answers and the illustration of the form should determine the final work.
